Title: Baby-Making Machines
Characters: Tonks, Ginny, Hermione, Molly
Word Count: 732
Rating: PG
Warnings: Gen, Snark, unbetaed
A/N: I speak for no one, I represent nothing. Just had to get a bit of snark out of my system.

Nymphadora Tonks

Whether pregnancy was intentional or not is really not the point is it? That’s between Remus and I. The fact that we love each other should be enough.

I watched the man who fights against evil, inside and out, and knows pain and sorrow beyond measure of what most people experience, weep with pride and happiness when he held our baby boy in his arms. I saw pure joy in his eyes for may be the only time in his life.

I gave him that.

I created that tiny person and no amount of Dark Wizard catching can equal that feeling of achievement and no one can make me regret it.

We will have to fight for our freedom before its over and how could I not do so as well? This isn’t some distant goblin war in a far away land, in a forgotten time; our enemies are knocking down the doors. They are hunting us and killing us. Every able wand will be needed and I will do my part to ensure that Teddy has a peaceful world to live.

If anyone thinks that’s weak, they can bugger off.

Ginny Weasley (Potter)

So being a mother is a waste of talent and magical power, is it? Isn’t that a charming sentiment? I suppose by that notion, only dimwitted and weak women should be mothers then, hm?

Or perhaps it would be okay if I only have one or two children, so long as I have a really important career as well. Well I’ll be sure that my children understand they are only as important to me as playing Quidditch.

I wonder if people think I’m being oppressed into marrying Harry Potter? That he somehow coerces me to bear his children – excuse me while I have a laugh.

Maybe there is no explaining it to people. It’ll be my gain and no amount of playing Quidditch could replace it.

Hermione Granger (Weasley)

Everyone wants to know what I’m going to do with my life.

Well, I’m going to do as much as I can, of course. I’d like to see somebody try and stop me. And you know what else? I’m going to have Ron Weasley’s babies. If there was ever a creature on earth that must procreate, it’s Ronald Weasley. I suppose I am a little biased, I’ve been in love with him half my life. Far too many people underestimate how amazing he is, but I’ve always known.

Not once in my life has anyone proposed that I couldn’t do or be in this world because I am a woman. Yet the moment I want to become a mother, I have somehow let womanhood down and debased myself for the sake of ‘tradition’?

… Maybe there’s more work to be done with human rights than I thought.

I wonder; will Ron ever be criticized for choosing to be a father?

Molly Weasley

It seems to me that the women who teach at Hogwarts are respected for doing their jobs. Education is a noble profession, isn’t that what they say? So I suppose teaching seven children how to read and write counts for nothing? Preparing them to leave our home and begin their education didn’t happen by magic alone. I may have made lots of mistakes over the years, goodness knows I’m not a perfect woman, but each and every one of my children makes this world a better place and it wasn’t the garden gnomes that raised them!

So many brave witches and wizards; Nymphadora, Remus, Kingsley, Alastor, Albus – yes even Dumbledore himself has sat at my table. They each knew they were safe while eating my treacle tart. They also knew they’d get an earful of mother’s advice while they were there. … I’d like to think they appreciated that.

I nurtured them all and if you ask me, the world would be better off if people respected a mother’s nurturing a little more. We might not be in this mess at all if You-Know-Who’s mother had cared for the boy more than she cared for herself.

And if I’m forced into this fight myself, then we’ll just see if those years of washing and cooking affect my ability to protect my family.

Oooh, you are lovely when you're snarky!

I’m going to have Ron Weasley’s babies. If there was ever a creature on earth that must procreate, it’s Ronald Weasley.

*big stupid grin*

Thank you. Especially for the Tonks bit. I really needed this. You're always so sensible, Maple.

Hugs.

I'm so glad you came to read it!

Yes, I was so upset for Tonks when she was criticized in DH. Especially after being all mousy for Remus in HBP, people just latched onto hating her for being weak. *sigh* I just don't think loving someone is weak. It makes you vulnerable and human, but not weak.

Thank you!

I love it when you become snarky!

That he somehow coerces me to bear his children – excuse me while I have a laugh.

Nope. Only that he must have slipped her a Sleeping Draught after having all the kids so he can name them himself...

If there was ever a creature on earth that must procreate, it’s Ronald Weasley.

Yes! You're so right!

YEP!

So much disrespect out there.

I would never have complained if Tonks remained childless, or if Hermione had chosen not to have children, but as that was their choice, I hated that they've been vilified for it.

Word. You write excellent snark, by the way. :D

And yes, Ron should most definitely procreate!

Ok, I haven't read the whole thing yet because I'm dead tired and falling asleep while I type, but:

"If there was ever a creature on earth that must procreate, it’s Ronald Weasley."

Someone needs to iconize this. Now.

I suppose I am unqualified to comment here as I don't posess the proper...ahem...bits to bear children.

As with every other prejudice that exists, the choice of motherhood should never be insulted. Every prejudice should be be met with a statement of one kind or another.

This is a GREAT statement sweety.

And if I’m forced into this fight myself, then we’ll just see if those years of washing and cooking affect my ability to protect my family.
And who was it that offed Bellatrix? Motherhood detractors may have conveniently forgotten that one.

Date: 2007-08-02 04:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fics-by-maple.livejournal.com
You don't need to have girl bits to have an opinion on motherhood, your opinion is every bit as valid.

It's just an old stereotype that women are letting down the 'sisterhood' or wasting education if they have children, especially if they stay home with them. Everyone must earn wages to have value, you know!

If I was a nanny, daycare provider or preschool teacher, no one would suggest that I was lazy or being dominated by my husband, yet, when I do the same for my own kids, its open for criticism apparently. *sigh*

*blush* Thank you.

It's a choice for everyone. That whole 'women's rights movements' *blinks* was supposed to give women the right to choose a life for themselves. I never hear McGonagall being criticized for not having kids, and she shouldn't be! But Molly is belittled all the time.

Hear, Hear! After all, where would ANY of us be without our mother?

This whole arguement over Hermione and Ginny becoming 'baby making machines' is so lame.

Your characters should finally put it to rest!

Well done!

Thank you! Hermione and Ginny are both so many brilliant things, they aren't going to sacrifice their brain to become mothers, and neither are going to suddenly become dominated by their husbands. *laughs*

I think it's pertinant that it was Molly who defeat Bellatrix.

Hermione:

*looks around* Who else is going to have Ron's babies?

From: [identity profile] fics-by-maple.livejournal.com
Very pertinent!

... well, if Hermione doesn't want the job, I can think of a few volunteers. :P

Hee - thank you!

And it's really not a simple matter of giving birth or not - a person's value is still measured in what they do with their lives.

BRAVO! This is awesome and you are amazing (although I already knew that). You made the argument that I always make to my feminist friends who think I am wasting my potential by devoting more time to motherhood than to my career. "Women's rights" is about having the RIGHT to choose what I WANT to do, and I WANT to be a mom!
