Lee skulked along the shore with his hands in his pockets, kicking the odd rock that dared to be in his path.

He wasn’t entirely sure why he was here, but Ronnikins, as he was inclined to call Ron out of habit, had pulled him aside earlier in the common room.

“Listen mate, I know you’re feeling kind of low right now. Can I suggest you take a walk around the east side of the lake, just at dusk? You won’t regret it.”

Feeling too lonely to study for NEWTS and having the natural inclination to take up the suggestion of a Weasley in his friends’ absence, here he found himself.

Lee heard the sound of water break, and there floating above the water, in a magnificent shade of purpley-charcoal was, The Giant Squid.

He’d never seen the legendary cephalopod before and thought this must be what sailors in the past felt like when they saw a mermaid.

Not knowing why he did it, he slipped off his shoes and socks and stepped into the water. It should have chilled his toes, but instead he was warm, full of anticipation and excitement, which he hadn’t felt since Fred and George had left him alone in this cold place.

The touch of the spongy tentacle curling around his ankle was startling at first, but he wasn’t a Gryffindor for nothing.
